BBC One balloon returns to the skies

As reported on Pres Cafe forum today, the BBC One balloon, kept in storage for many years, will be hopefully taking to the skies once again this year, according to Bristol Balloon Collectors on Facebook.

An interesting fact about the balloon is that the original idea was for it not just to appear on the channel idents, but for it to be used as a physical promotional tool by flying it at different events across the UK, such as Wimbledon. The late Martin Lambie-Nairn talks a little bit about this in a talk he did in 2009 (20 mins, 30 secs in).

It would have been a wonderful idea, but even without it, the balloon still continues to be a much loved and remembered part of television history, and it’s great news to hear that it will fly once again.
